Your Low Point In Golf

by Dale Chavez on March 16th, 2007

Have you ever reached your lowest point in golf, wondering what kind of swing will show up on the next tee box? I’ve reached that point for me personally. Actually, it came last fall while playing with our regular threesome, my brother Gary and, and our buddy Perry. It actually had been coming over the summer as my swing was becoming more inconsistent each weekend, and the more I concentrated to be consistent, the harder it became to even swing the club.

And finally in the fall (September?, who knows), I emailed Gary and Perry and told them that I was done, at least for the short-term because I was embarrassing myself and holding them up in the process. I’ve been playing golf for 30+ years, and it was only a couple of years ago I was still shooting in the mid-to-high-80s quite regularly. In fact, it was only three years ago when I shot 89 at Pebble Beach! When I stopped last fall, it was a chore to break 100 for the first time since I took up the game.

This weekend I’m supposed to play nine holes for the first time in almost 6 months and I’m a little anxious on the one hand because I’m not sure how bad it’s going to be. On the other hand, I’m a little excited because maybe the long layoff might have done some good? Not really. I have some technical flaws in my swing that as I’ve gotten older, I can’t compensate for any more. When I took some lessons a few years ago, the pro told me, “it’s a good thing you have pretty good hand-eye coordination…”.

If I could sum up my swing faults (and Gary and Perry can correct me here), they would be, 1) over-swinging the club (way past parallel), and 2) crossing the line at the top. This of course leads to major compensation-time coming down and now it just doesn’t happen. Which leads to more effort trying to compensate, which leads to more hurried shots and the eventual outcome. If anyone has some suggestions on how to get the swing and confidence back, please leave a comment.
