Woods To Miss Kapalua?

by Dale Chavez on December 19th, 2006

The 2006 season is barely over with and Tiger has already made the PGA brass nervous about next year. As everyone knows, the PGA Tour’s FedEx Cup begins in 2007 with a kick-off at the Mercedes Benz Championship at Kapalua on January 4th. The problem is that no one knows whether Tiger and Phil are coming to the party.

Even some of Tiger’s supporters are calling for him to show up at Kapalua, if nothing else, than to support Tim Finchem, the comish of the PGA Tour. However, Tiger’s no dummy and whether anyone wants to admit or not, Woods is the straw that stirs the drink as far as the PGA Tour is concerned. Study after study shows that when Tiger’s in contention, TV ratings and attendance soar; when he’s not, well, not as many people care.

Rumor has it that at one point in the last 10 years, Woods did in fact let Finchem know, in no uncertain terms, that he’d take his game elsewhere if he had to, so as not to be shackled by the PGA’s requirements. Of course, everyone knows, including Tiger, that there’s not a professional tour on the planet that’s going to pay what the PGA Tour pays, over time. Yes, the European and Asian tours would love to have Tiger as their own draw, but quite frankly, they can’t afford him.

I personally think Tiger will show in Kapalua, but I also believe he’ll let Finchem know that the comish owes him one. And what about Phil? If Tiger doesn’t show, then Mickelson’s appearance takes on a different kind of importance and Finchem would be beside himself if neither shows up.
