Woods Fades; Mickelson Stumbles
Tiger Woods had the first round leaders in his sights as he approached the 17th tee. He was 1-under for the tournament and was looking to finish solid. Instead he left himself difficult up and downs on both 17 and 18 and never recovered. It was weird watching him play the last two holes because it was like someone else was calling the shots. His par putt attempt on 17 was absolutely horrible and he’s lucky he made the bogey putt because it was far from a gimme.
And Phil? Like Tiger, he putted like a 20-handicapper on some holes, but give him credit because he made two birdies coming in, so it might have charged him up for tomorrow. Bad news for Phil though is that he can’t afford another bad round. He has to shoot under par just to remain close to the leaderboard.
So what about the leaders? Like any major, leading after the 1st-round doesn’t amount to much (unless your Mickelson, Woods, Singh, et. al.) because most of these guys won’t be around come Sunday afternoon.
