Winged Foot Golf Club Members Reject the US Open

by Sandy Mitchell on January 3rd, 2008

Apparently five times is enough for members of the tony Winged Foot Golf Club in Westchester County, New York. The club, which hosted the 1929, 1959, 1974, 1984, and 2006 US Open Championships, has rejected the US Open’s offer that they be considered for the 2015 Championship.

The private club, established in 1921, has two 18-hole courses, both of which are ranked on Golf Digest’s list of “America’s 100 Greatest Golf Courses.”

According to ESPN.com, the issue was money and inconvenience. The members, reportedly, objected to the fact that the club would receive the same amount in 2015 for use of the facility as it did in 2006. In addition, there were objections to both courses being closed to member play for the duration of the event–one for the tournament and one for hospitality tents.
