Who is Steve Lowery?

by Sandy Mitchell on February 13th, 2008

Steve LoweryI love these stories. Probably because I’m a lot closer in age to Steve Lowery than to Tiger Woods. Lowery, at 47, just moved up 189 spots in the world golf rankings this week, from 305 to 116, with his playoff win over Vijay Singh at the AT&T Pro-Am National Tournament in Pebble Beach.

Just who is Steve Lowery? The University of Alabama graduate is no stranger to the PGA circuit. This is his 25th year on the tour. Wins, however, have alluded him in the last few years. His last win before the AT&T was in 2000 and the 1,080,000 prize for last week’s win is more than he won in all of 2007.

The world golf rankings continue to be led by Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Steve Stricker, and Erie Els.

Steve Lowery is the typical journeyman on the PGATour who labours on without much attention or notice. Moving around the different stops finishing the job at one place, packing his bags and then checking in to the next location. It feels good when players like him win te odd tournament. He won his first tournament on the PGA Tour in 1994 some 11 years after he turned pro. After that he did not taste victory for another six years and now he beat Vijay Singh in a playoff for just his third title. When professionals don’t win for so many years, they start doubting themselves and these doubts often overpower the player and result in a complete breakdown of their game.

But when players come out of the wilderness to get their name on the trophy again I am sure it feels almost as good as their first victory. Of course Steve Lowery would have had to wait a little longer for his third victory had it not been for Vijay Singh’s game unraveling on the back nine. Had it not been for a birdie on the last there would not have been a playoff in the first place. But for Vijay’s disappointment there is of course Steve Lowery’s victory to cherish.
