U.S. Open Hype Begins; Tracking the Ryder Cup; LPGA Execs Resign

by Dale Chavez on June 13th, 2006

PGA

It’s never too early to begin the hype for the 106th U.S. Open, being played at famed Winged Foot in Mamaroneck, New York. All the buzz so far has been around Tiger Woods and his return to competitive golf, his first tournament since his Father passed away on May 3rd.

Tiger is famous for his press conferences leaving most of the media to come up with their own interpretations on what he said, since he holds his cards very close to the vest. However, on Tuesday he spoke candidly about “Dad”, and their relationship and how he shaped Tiger as a person. Will Tiger be a factor this year? Hard to say, but I’ll give my predictions on Wednesday.

Ryder Cup

I’m going to start giving semi-regular updates on Ryder Cup standings since the way points are accumulated has changed this year.

How Ryder Cup Points Are Accumulated

The 2006 U.S. Ryder Cup team is chosen on the basis of points compiled by players starting with the NEC Invitational in August of 2004, through the 88th PGA Championship, which concludes August, 2006.Regular-season wins on the PGA Tour in a non-Ryder Cup year still earn a player 75 points. A regular-season win in Ryder Cup years will now give a player 375 points, up from 150, while points for top-10 finishes will double. In the major championships, a win now earns a player 450 points, up from 225 in the previous system. Points for finishing in the top-10 at a major also will be increased.

A win in one of the four majors during a Ryder Cup year will give a player 675 points, compared to 300 under the old system. Players can only earn points as a top-10 finisher in sanctioned events and the points for spots two through 10 have also been increased. The top-10 players on the points list will earn automatic spots onto the 2006 Unites States Ryder Cup squad, captained by Tom Lehman.

LPGA

So the fallout hasn’t stopped since Carolyn Bivens became the LPGA’s newest commish. Last week three top LPGA staff members resigned on the eve of the LPGA Championship. This happens in the corporate world when there are major changes at the executive level and is not all that suprising, but the timing is curious in this case. Couple that with the fact the LPGA is in the middle of what might be its most lucrative time in history and it makes even less sense.
