The Ties That Bind Them
Tiger Woods, Chris DiMarco, and Darren Clarke. The casual golfer knows that on the surface, all that they have in common is that they’re professional golfers. For the more serious golf fan, they know that what really links them together this year is that all three men have dealt with the loss of immediate family members. And they’ve all dealt with their losses differently, though Clarke will be returning this week for the first time since his wife Heather passed away.
I can’t imagine what it’s like to lose a family member, but I’m not sure I’d have the wherewithall to put it aside like these guys have and continue to do what you do best. Tiger grieved for a while and after his hiccup at the U.S. Open, he’s got that same focus he had in 1999/2000. DiMarco lost his mother right before the Open Championship in Liverpool and played outstanding golf while he was there; no doubt running on adrenaline. Clarke is coming back this week to play in the Madrid Open in Spain, and then the week of Ryder Cup hysteria starts. Will Clarke be a factor in the matches? Does it really matter?
I’m sure I’ll be rooting for Clarke simply because he’s a great guy and the Ryder Cup is supposed to about fun and camraderie. Can we get back to that once again?
