The Masters - Why The Hoopla?

by Dale Chavez on April 4th, 2007

Yes, it’s Masters week and every golf publication and Web site has Masters covered from all angles, as they do every year. Which got me thinking. Why all the hoopla? I watched my first Masters on TV in 1973 and while I didn’t know much about the history of it back then, I could tell there was something special about the tournament. All I knew was that it was one of the four majors, so it must be important. Not so coincidentally, that was the same year I got hooked on golf.

But it wasn’t until 1975 that the real Masters bug got a hold of me. Yeah, part of it was the fact that Jack won, but was also the way that everyone spoke about Augusta National with a reverential tone. My favorite Masters has got to be 1986, when Jack won his last green jacket at the age of 46 (which doesn’t seem all that old today). Yes, Tiger has had some great moments, especially when he won by 12 strokes, but it was a different course when Nicklaus, Trevino, Watson, Iriwn, Player, and Palmer played and was definitely more of a shotmakers course.

And nowadays, with all the Masters-related Web sites, you can overdose on Masters coverage and not even realize it. There’s the official Masters Web site where you’ll be able to watch live coverage of Amen corner on their Web site during all four days. My favorite though is probably the GolfWorld Masters coverage site. It has some great maps and articles on the history of Augusta National.
