The Golf Channel Announces Amateur Tour

by Dale Chavez on December 8th, 2006

In a somewhat strange move, the Golf Channel announced today that it’s sponsoring an “Amateur Tour”, nationwide, for all abilities and skill levels. Say what? Here’s the official announcement: “The mission of the Golf Channel Amateur Tour is to provide amateur golfers, nationwide, a professionally organized format in order to compete at the highest possible level. Our goal is for participants on the Tour to receive a treatment comparable to what a golfer would get playing on a professional tour.”

The last sentence is mystifying for sure. They want amateur golfers to receive treatment comparable to what professional golfers get on the professional tours. So that means the guys on the Nationwide tour can reclaim their amateur status and join the amateur tour to see what it feels like to get treated like a real pro? I’m so confused.

And what about the handicaps. Anyone that’s played amateur golf tournaments at the local club knows that your handicap is really the holy grail if winning amateur tournaments are what motivate you. And we all know that absolutely no one sandbags, and everyone is playing to their real handicap. If you’ve ever witnessed the heated discussions after the trophies have been handed out, then you know what I mean. Now, imagine this on a national level. What in the world is the Golf Channel thinking?

Someone enlighten me.
