Making Sense of the FedExCup Playoffs

The second annual FedExCup PGA playoffs begin this week with The Barclay’s Tournament in Paramus, New Jersey. The FedExCup spans four tournaments and rewards the top finishers with an extra bonus of up to $10 million. The FedExCup period this year spans five weeks instead of four as the Ryder Cup event falls within September and is not a part of the playoff event.

Beginning the playoffs, the top ten players are:

Tiger Woods
Kenny Perry
Phil Mickelson
Padraig Harrington
Anthony Kim
Stewart Cink
Vijay Singh
Justin Leonard
Ryuji Imada
Geoff Ogilvy

Of course, Woods will not be competing in any of the FedExCup events due to his having knee surgery earlier in the season.

US Ryder Cup Team Taking Shape

Eight of the 12 Ryder Cup team members have earned a spot, following the PGA Championship that concluded last weekend. They are:

Phil Mickelson
Stewart Cink
Kenny Perry
Jim Furyk
Anthony Kim
Justin Leonard
Boo Weekley

The other four participants will be chosen by team captain, Paul Azinger. He has until September 2 to make his decision.

Team Europe members will be announced in three weeks. Ten of the members will automatically qualify based on their rankings. Two will be chosen by team captain, Nick Faldo.

The Ryder Cup is September 19 – 21 at Kentucky’s Valhalla Golf Course.

Cink Wins the Travelers

Stewart Cink, who has been playing good, but not winning golf of late, captured the Travelers Championship win this past weekend by one stroke over Tommy Armour III and Hunter Mahan. Cink came in second to Tiger Woods in this year’s WGC Match Play competition, but his last win was in 2004 at the WGC-NEC Tournament in Akron.

The 35-year-old Cink, a native of Alabama, has been a pro golfer since 1995. The Travelers is his 12th professional win. Cink also made our “Eight Hottest Guys on the PGA Tour” list earlier this year.

Tiger Wins the WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship

Stewart Cink may have made our list of the hottest guys on the PGA tour, but he was no match yesterday for Tiger yesterday in the final round of the WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship. It was a good day, even by Woods’ high standards. He told the Associated Press “I think (the final 18 holes) is the best stretch I’ve ever played.”

The talk around the blogosphere is that Tiger is unstoppable. Do you agree?

The Hottest Guys on the PGA Tour

It’s not unusual to see articles about the sexy girls of the LPGA, like Natalie Gublis and Michelle Wie. However, little is written about the guys on the PGA Tour. Those who stereotype might say that male golfers are all boring, white guys with beer bellies. I don’t think that’s a fair representation. In my opinion, there are plenty of hot guys on the tour, including my picks (in alphabetical order) for the top eight:

Stuart Appleby

This 36-year-old Australian has the rugged good looks that come from growing up in the Aussie countryside. (He was raised on a dairy farm.) Appleby has 8 PGA wins since joining the tour in 1996.

Daniel Chopra

I think it might be the hair that I find attractive. It might also be that he’s a true “citizen of the world:” born in Sweden, raised in India, and now living in Australia and the UK. Whatever it is, this 35-year has started the year right, winning the Mercedes-Benz tournament in January.

Stewart Cink

Stewart Cink is tall (6′4″) and a solid golfer, with 4 PGA wins since joining the tour in 1995. He has that no-nonsense look and that southern charm. (He’s from Alabama.)

Ben Crane

This 31-year-old Oregon native has a boyish look. He’s perhaps best known for his slow-ish play, but we don’t fault him for that. We think he’s cute.

Greg Norman

Yes, I know he’s 52 years old, but who says men in their 50s can’t be hot? Plus, Greg Norman designs golf courses, owns a winery, and still isn’t a bad golfer. The “Shark” has 20 PGA wins and spent 331 weeks as the world’s top-ranked players in the 1980s and 1990s.

Adam Scott

This 27-year old Australian has been mentioned as a successor to countryman, Greg Norman. In my opinion, he’s just as interesting. He also has five PGA wins in his five years on the tour.

Camilo Villegas

The tour’s Latin hottie hails from Columbia, but not resides in Florida. Now in his 3rd year on the tour, Villegas was named the “most ripped player” on the PGA tour by “Golf Digest” magazine. Who am I to argue?

Tiger Woods

What can I say; I’m a fan. Tiger’s class, elegance, and winning ways are a force to be reckoned with.
