Phil and Annika Win the Weekend

It was a good weekend for golf’s wannabe top-ranked players. Phil Mickelson, who’s been struggling so far this season and even failed to make the cut at the AT&T at Pebble Beach, won the Northern Trust Open by two strokes over Jeff Quinney. It was his 33rd PGA win.
On the LPGA circuit, Annika Sorenstam showed that she’s brought her game for 2008. She won the SBS Open, the first LPGA event for the season, handily with two birdies on the last two holes. The win was an impressive #70 for Annika.

While Tiger was dazzling the crowds in Dubai and most of the United States was watching the Super Bowl in Glendale, Arizona, J B Holmes was just down the road in Scottsdale giving the world’s #2 golfer, Phil Mickelson, a formidable challenge.
The 25-year-old, three-year pro from Kentucky, birdied the 18th hole with a 13-foot putt to force a play-off between the two golfers for the FBR Open title. Getting Ready to Tackle Torrey Pines

The PGA heads to San Diego County’s Torrey Pines Country Club this week for the Buick Invitational Golf Tournament. The event is especially noteworthy in that the Tour’s two top players–Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson–are making their season debut there. The tournament will also be good preparation for the US Open that will be played on the same course in June.
