Choi Wins the Sony Open

K. J. Choi didn’t have his best round yesterday, but his play during the week helped make up for his 1+ fourth round to beat challenger Rory Sabbatini by three strokes and capture the 2008 Sony Open title, his seventh PGA career win. The swirling winds contributed to the relatively high scores on Sunday.

Choi, 39, is something of a national hero in his native South Korea. The son of a seafood and algae farmer, he grew up with a passion for golf from reading books by Jack Nicklaus, but lived 60 miles from the nearest 18-hole course. Still, the passion prevailed, leading Choi to finish fifth in the FedEx Cup standings in 2007.

The First Round at Kapalua

It wasn’t exactly a perfect day in Paradise. The skies opened up frequently during round one of the Mercedes-Benz Championship, the first PGA Tour date of 2008, being played at the Plantation Course on Maui’s Kapalua Bay Resort (pictured above on a much sunnier day). The deluge produced striking rainbows, but also left the the greens soggy and slow. Veterans of the course, including last year’s winner Vijay Singh, seemed confused about playing under those water-logged conditions.

Still, after over a month’s hiatus, it was great to see the first drive of the new season. Highlights of the early round included a fine effort by young golfer Brandt Snedeker, who is recovering from the flu and who led for most of the back nine until he cracked his driver and lost his concentration on the 17th hole. Also noteworthy were some incredible putts by Daniel Chopra, who completed the round in second place.

Nick Watney reached the clubhouse in first place, with a -5 and defending champion Vijay Singh shot a +1. Several of the top PGA players, including Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson, are sitting out this tournament.

The Mercedes-Benz Championship continues today. The round is being televised on the Golf Channel, beginning at 6pm.

Justin Timberlake to Host Las Vegas PGA Tour Event

The PGA Tour announced on Monday that Justin Timberlake will serve as host of the Las Vegas PGA Tour event in 2008.

The Justin Timberlake Shriners Hospitals for Children Open will take place October 13-19, 2008. Timberlake, who plays to a 6-handicap, will take part in the Wednesday celebrity pro-am and host a concert during the week of the tournament as well.

“We will raise money for charity while participating in the greatest game ever played,” Timberlake told the press. “I thank the PGA Tour and the Shriners Hospitals for Children this amazing opportunity. Raising money to better children’s lives while playing golf? I can’t think of a better way to pass the time.”

Comedian and actor George Lopez will also host a tournament next year. Other celebrities that have headlined PGA Tour events in the past include Bob Hope, Bing Crosby, Sammy Davis Jr., Frank Sinatra and many more.
