It was a good weekend for golf’s wannabe top-ranked players. Phil Mickelson, who’s been struggling so far this season and even failed to make the cut at the AT&T at Pebble Beach, won the Northern Trust Open by two strokes over Jeff Quinney. It was his 33rd PGA win.
On the LPGA circuit, Annika Sorenstam showed that she’s brought her game for 2008. She won the SBS Open, the first LPGA event for the season, handily with two birdies on the last two holes. The win was an impressive #70 for Annika.

The PGA Tour heads to the Northern Trust Open this week. If you’re like me, you’re shaking your head at this one. No, it’s not a new event, it’s just one of those renamed, repackaged tournaments. Remember the Nissan Open…and the Los Angeles Open before that? That event is now the Northern Trust Open–new sponsor, new name.
Leading the field at southern California’s Riviera Country Club will be defending champion, Charles Howell III as well as recent tour winners, J B Holmes, Daniel Chopra, and Steve Lowery.
