Although I’d like to be able to say that my earliest sports memory was swinging a golf club when it was taller than I was, the truth is I didn’t take up the game until I was in my early 20s.

That and I grew up in Columbus Ohio, which for those of you in other parts of the country means Ohio State Football. Before I could even master my multiplication tables, I could recite OSU player stats like a expert commentator.

The 1960s was the era of Woody Hayes and “three yards and a cloud of dust” and I delighted in going with my dad to the games to which he wasn’t taking clients. I didn’t care that it wasn’t the Michigan game; seeing Purdue or Illinois was fine with me. When I got older, I attended high school with running back, Archie Griffin, who would go on to win two Heisman Trophies while at Ohio State (the only person to every win twice). I was much younger than him, of course; he was a senior when I was a freshman.

Do you have a favorite childhood sports memory–golf-related or not?
