Post Nabisco, The Masters, and CBS

by Dale Chavez on April 4th, 2006

LPGA

I watched a replay of the Kraft Nabisco Championship again and it’s confirmed, the LPGA is in great hands for the next 20 years or so. Michelle Wie has been criticized unfairly I believe in the last day or so because some experts felt she should have putted her eagle attempt on the 72nd hole instead of chipping it. I think Judy Rankin said it best when she commented that the player has to hit the club that they feel most comfortable with, and obviously Michelle thought the chip was the correct shot. It’s easy to forget that Wie just turned 16 years old and already the expectations are that she should play like a seasoned veteran. Give her time and she’ll be regularly winning LPGA events along with Creamer, Gulbis, Kerr, Pressel and the rest.

On a side note, I thought the CBS coverage of the Nabisco was average at best. Judy Rankin was the class of the telecast and provided as much insight as possible, but she couldn’t be everywhere. None of the commentators/analysts asked what Wie’s chip was going to do on the 72nd hole which gives viewers a little insight on the speed and break of the greens. On the up side, did you see the galleries at the Nabisco? It was great to see the fans lining the fairways again at LPGA events and the young guns (with all due respect to Webb’s win) are bringing them back.

The Masters

This is Masters week and the hype has been in high gear for days now. After listening to some of the players talk after Monday’s practice round, you’d think there were Big Break obstacles all over the course. Yes, it’s been lengthened again, but for the money these guys are playing for, they ought to be playing with Persimmon woods and balata balls. Tiger’s the overwhelming favorite, but given the personal distractions he’s dealing with right now, I think he’s probably not going to be focused enough to be a factor. His relationship with his Father is obviously very special and without speculating, it appears Earl Woods is extremely ill dealing with his cancer.

The forecast for Augusta this week is supposed to be dry and if so, the greens could play a huge part in determining Sunday’s champion. The course has been narrowed, and you can’t afford to miss some of the greens, but Augusta still allows players to get up and down if they have a great short game. The top 5 all hit it very long, but they all have outstanding short games as well. I think Els is going to step up this week and make it interesting.
