Phil and Annika Win the Weekend

by Sandy Mitchell on February 18th, 2008

Phil Mickelson

It was a good weekend for golf’s wannabe top-ranked players. Phil Mickelson, who’s been struggling so far this season and even failed to make the cut at the AT&T at Pebble Beach, won the Northern Trust Open by two strokes over Jeff Quinney. It was his 33rd PGA win.

On the LPGA circuit, Annika Sorenstam showed that she’s brought her game for 2008. She won the SBS Open, the first LPGA event for the season, handily with two birdies on the last two holes. The win was an impressive #70 for Annika.

If this weekend was any indication, we’ll be seeing more of both players as the season progresses.

Now that is the first time I have come across that term “Wannabe top ranked players”. Of course we know who stands a more realistic chance. Phil despite his first victory at the Riviera will have to do a lot more to come near Tiger, but Annika is definitely back with a bang. After a terrible injury plagued 2007, Annika has got her first victory as early as she could have managed in the season opener. While Lorena Ochoa might have completed dominated last season looking at the start Annika has made to this year she sure is sending out strong signals that she will definitely try and wrest her throne back from Lorena. It may not have been a dominating victory after all Annika managed a two stroke victory and sh had birdies in the last two holes it still means we have a fascinating battle on our hands on the LPGA this season. Lorena chose not to tee up for SBS open, waiting for the new tournament in Singapore to get her season going. Annika wants her number one position back and it shows in her determination but that is easier said than done because Lorena Ochoa still stands in her way.
