Notes From The Players Championship
Phil Mickelson played a masterful round of golf on Sunday to win the Players Championship, and he’s deserving of all the accolades he’s sure to receive because of it. However, I do have a beef with the way the course was set up for the best players in the world. There was no rough to speak of if you hit off-line 10 or 15 yards and in fact the only reason guys weren’t hitting driver all the time was because there were too many trees. And the greens were playing as soft as your local muni after a rainstorm, which for these guys, means they can be aggressive with their approach shots, as well as their putts. Hopefully next year they’ll add some bite back to the course, because if not, they might as well call this the 84 Lumber Classic.
Poor Sergio. If you listened to just him, you’d think (as always) the world is out to get him. This time, he felt that his playing partner’s caddie cost him a stroke because the caddie questioned Garcia’s drop on the 2nd hole. Garcia said the dispute made him tense and “definitely” cost him one stroke. Garcia has already lifted the chip off of Seve’s shoulder and placed squarely on his own shoulder, and he’s not even 30 yet. Too bad because Sergio truly is a great golf talent.
