Mike Weir Wins Frys’ Electronics Open

Congratulations to Mike Weir for winning the Frys’ Electronics Open, after he shot a 2-under 68 on Sunday for a one-stroke victory over Australia’s Mark Hensby.
It’s great to see Mike back on his game, and hopefully his success will continue in 2008.
It was Mike’s first victory since he won the 2004 Nissan Open.
He finished at 14-under 266 for his eighth PGA TOUR victory, which ties him with George Knudson for most PGA tour victories by a Canadian.
The victory was worth $900,000 and moves him to 33rd on the 2007 PGA tour money list.
Carl Pettersson, who led after three rounds, and Sean O’Hair tied for fourth at
9 under. Pettersson shot a 74, and O’Hair had a 69.

Looks like the only real beneficiary from this years Presidents Cup has been Mike Weir. Despite Woody Austin’s heroic attempt from the water, Mike Weir’s victory over Tiger Woods gave the Canadians a lot to cheer about and now it seems high on confidence after that victory he has finally ended a 3 and a half year drought on the PGA Tour. His last win came in early 2004 at the Nissan Open.
Many had started to assume that the Green Jacket at Augusta was just a flash in the pan and he was unlikely to be playing anywhere near that level. It looked like he did not feel upto it mentally. But fierce determination coupled with strong local support helped him overcome Tiger’s challenge at the Royal Montreal. That probably gave him just the right fillip he needed and now a win on tour definitely reaffirms the belief the Canadian is very much there in the middle of the action.
