Mayfair Has Cancer Surgery

by Dale Chavez on August 5th, 2006

Billy Mayfair was diagnosed with testicular cancer surgery this week and had successful surgery on Thursday in Arizona. Mayfair is expected to return for the PGA Championship which starts August 17 at Medinah. Our best wishes go out to Billy and his family and we wish a speedy recovery.

Tiger Woods is 18 holes away from winning his 50th PGA tournament. 50. That’s five zero wins. And he’s only 30 years old. He leads by two at the Buick Open over Robert Allenby. However, this win is hardly in the bag as Allenby is an excellent golfer and will concede nothing to Tiger on Sunday.

Sherri Steinhauer leads the Women’s British Open by three shots over Julie Inkster and Lorena Ochoa. Don’t look now but Cristie (missing-in-action) Kerr and Natalie Gulbis are only 4 shots back heading into Sunday’s final round at Royal Lytham and St Annes in England.

If you ever doubted that the LPGA is a second-tier sporting event, then this week’s TV coverage of their British Open should remove all doubt. ABC is broadcasting tomorrow’s final round from 1:30-3:00 PM. That’s 1.5 hours of tape-delayed coverage of an LPGA major tournament, being shown after-the-fact. How frustrating to see the LPGA get second-class treatment from the network executives. Yes, this includes the Golf Channel.
