Goydos Wins Sony Open

Paul Goydos, a journeyman professional on the PGA Tour, came from nowhere to win the Sony Open in Hawaii. Let’s be clear and understand that Goydos didn’t back into this win. He made the pressure putts when he needed to, unlike Charles Howell III. I was pulling hard for Howell III, but his lack of experience in the final group really showed today as he missed some critical shots.
This started as a shootout between Howell III and Luke Donald and they put on a show of how not to win a golf tournament. Both had numerous opportunities, but neither could convert when it really mattered. I feel for Howell III the most because he had a chance to tie Goydos on the 18th and all he needed to do was put his chip shot with 5 feet. Sadly, he hit a shot most 20-handicapper players hit all the time, and he left himself a difficult birdie putt that in the end, didn’t even scare the hole.
Ironically for Goydos, this tournament will probably be most remembered for the excitement a Hawaiian amateur created, and I’m not talking about Michelle Wie. Tadd Fujikawa, a 16-year old, 5-foot-1 amateur, first made the cut on Friday and then shot 66 on Saturday and at one point was only 4 back of the leaders! However, I think the most compelling stat of his was that up until the 15th hole on Sunday, he was leading the tournament in greens in regulation! Simply amazing.

The big weekend golf story was definitely that of the contrasting Hawaiian teens. I have a feeling Paul Goydos is probably OK with that. Not so sure abt Howell III and Donald.
