Making Sense of the FedExCup Playoffs

The second annual FedExCup PGA playoffs begin this week with The Barclay’s Tournament in Paramus, New Jersey. The FedExCup spans four tournaments and rewards the top finishers with an extra bonus of up to $10 million. The FedExCup period this year spans five weeks instead of four as the Ryder Cup event falls within September and is not a part of the playoff event.

Ever since his challenge to Tiger Woods in this year’s US Open, veteran golfer, Rocco Mediate has become the player of the ordinary man. However, this isn’t going to be the week to see Mediate kissing a trophy. Having ended the third round in the middle of the pact, he’s fallen to the bottom of the leader board after 12 holes in the fourth round with a +9 so far for the day. I imagine Rocco’s praying for another rain storm.

Perry out of PGA Championship with Eye Injury

Kenny Perry, who is trailing only Tiger Woods in this year’s money list, was forced to withdraw from the PGA Championship due to complications from a recent Lasik eye surgery. This was Perry’s first major tournament this year, but he has three PGA wins so far and has clinched a spot on the US Ryder Cup team. The Ryder Cup begins at Valhalla Country Club in Louisville on September 16.

Orville “Champ” Moody Dies at 74

You may not remember Orville “Champ” Moody, but in his day, he was regarded as one of the best ball-strikers in the game. He is best known for winning the 1969 US Open, the last winner to go through the local and regional qualifying rounds.
Moody joined the PGA tour in 1967 after a career in the military. He played 250 tournaments, but the Open was his only tour win. He had more success on the Senior Tour (now the Champions Tour). He won 11 Senior Tour events. Moody died today at age 74. No details on his death were …read more
