Pettersen Wins Finally Wins Major

Pettersen Wins Finally Wins Major

Kudos to Suzann Pettersen for winning her first major, the McDonalds LPGA Championship. She played excellent golf, especially down the stretch when Karrie Webb was matching her birdie-for-birdie. I know there’s a lot of noise being made about Webb’s comeback the last couple of years, but it she seems to having lots of luck as well (better to be lucky than good).
Webb drained far more than her fair share of putts today which helped keep her nipping at the heels of Pettersen. Yes, Webb played some solid golf, but she hit some loose approach shots, …read more

Suprise Leader at LPGA Championship

Suprise Leader at LPGA Championship

After three rounds at the LPGA Championship, rookie Na On Min leads Suzann Pettersen by one, Karrie Webb by two, and Morgan Pressel by three, heading into Sunday’s final round. On Min shot a blistering 65 today on a day when a lot of the veterans couldn’t get anythng going.
Pettersen had an up and down round, and you see the obvious frustration on her face as she was trying to make birdies coming in. Karrie Webb had a similar round, and she too missed opportunities all day, and couldn’t make a putt when she needed them.
It’s too …read more

Daly’s Freefall Continues

Daly’s Freefall Continues

John Daly is competing at this week’s St. Jude Championship, and when he arrived, it was obvious that something had gone terribly wrong. Daly alleges his estranged wife attacked him with a steak knife, and his face was in fact full of red marks, as if something or someone had scratched him. Daly did file a complaint with the local county sheriff, but authorities claimed they were unable to find the “suspect”.
Wow. It’s hard to imagine that Daly has fallen this far, in what seems to be a short amount of time. It’s important to note …read more

Miller’s 63 At Oakmont

Miller’s 63 At Oakmont

There’s been numerous articles written the past couple of weeks remembering Johnny Miller’s 63 during the final round to win the ‘73 U.S. Open. I remember watching that U.S. Open very vividly as if it were yesterday. I was thoroughly hooked on golf in 1973 and being single and living in the barracks afforded me the opportunity to practically live at the golf course. Watching golf on T.V. in 1973 was not all that great to be honest. There were very few cameras back then, and even then the quality wasn’t very good, but it …read more

Things Are Getting Strange

Things Are Getting Strange

Professional golf is usually a non-event when it comes to controversy and interesting news, but I think the rest of year is shaping up to be a strange year. The Wie story is prominent right now, but you have Tiger Woods who will be out for at least part of the summer swing (and maybe even miss a major or two), and know one knows how bad Mickelson’s wrist really is.
There were more stories today (and further insight) into the Wie saga, but suffice to say team-Wie has a very long summer ahead of it, and now that …read more

The Wie Controversy Continues

The Wie Controversy Continues

A cloud of controversy continues to follow Michelle Wie around, days after she withdrew from the Ginn Tribute. It was reported today that a small group of LPGA players met with tour officials to complain that Wie had practiced at the RiverTowne CC, the week prior to the Ginn Tribute. (And her wrist was okay while she played the course; imagine that.) Tour members are banned from playing the competition venue the seven days prior to the event, but because Wie is not a member of the LPGA, she’s exempt from this rule. Okay, this is …read more

Nicklaus: The World Catching U.S.

Nicklaus: The World Catching U.S.

Jack Nicklaus held court at his tournament over the weekend and made some very interesting (and accurate) comments about the state of professional golf. The gist of his comment was that professional golfers are now coming from every corner of the globe nowadays, and that the U.S. does not necessarily have a lock on the best players any longer. And I think he’s right on the money.
And you can thank Tiger Woods indirectly for that. Tiger’s growth on the PGA Tour changed everything related to professional golf, which included absurd money that the Americans are …read more

Ochoa Chokes Until She Loses

Ochoa Chokes Until She Loses

Okay, the title sounds harsh, but it was really painful watching Lorena Ochoa coming in on the back nine today at the Ginn Tribute. Nicole Castrale was the beneficiary of Ochoa’s choke, and let’s call it what it was: Ochoa gave the tournament away. At one point today, she led by 4 shots, but she bogeyed 16 and 17 which allowed Castrale into the tournament. Yes, Castrale birdied the 17th, but had Ochoa made a par at either hole, she would have won the tournament.
Dottie Pepper kept saying that Ochoa’s achilles heel was the tee …read more

Can Mickelson Contend for the U.S. Open Still?

Can Mickelson Contend for the U.S. Open Still?

Phil Mickelson had an MRI performed on his injured wrist, and lucky for him, he didn’t break a bone. However, I think the wrist injury is probably more serious than he’s leading on. And if so, will this affect his ability to play, much less, contend in the U.S. Open? Given Phil’s new-found approach to the majors, I think he’ll be a serious contender, if he’s playing hurt a little.
Mickelson wants to exorcise the demons from his debacle at the 2006 U.S. Open, when all he had to do was make bogey to win …read more

Wie’s WD – Another Perspective

Wie’s WD – Another Perspective

I ran across this great article that details Michelle Wie’s withdrawal from the Ginn Tribute on Thursday. As I’ve already said, the “wrist injury” is a little suspect as to why she withdrew, but we’ll give her the benefit of the doubt, and assume the fact that she was staring 88 in the face, and a possible ban on the LPGA, just might have had something else to do with it.
In any case, some highlights from the article that I found interesting: there were only a couple of dozen fans that were following her? Wow, that’s a …read more
