Jesper Parnevik shot a career-best opening 61 and followed it up with a 5-under 65 on Friday afternoon to take a four stroke lead midway through the Valero Texas Open in San Antonio.
His 14-under 126 total is the lowest 36-hole score on the PGA Tour this year, and amazingly just one stroke off the tour record of 125 held by four players, including Tiger Woods.
The 42-year-old, who is best known for his wild wardrobe, is in front Mathias Gronberg (-10) in second.

The Associated Press is reporting that Seve Ballesteros has announced his retirement. His reason? Simple: “I don’t have the desire.”
It’s hard to fault a guy for that. Congratulations to Ballesteros on a fine career, and best of luck in whatever the future may hold for him…

Six years and 151 events. Call Brian Bateman patient. Call him opportunistic (Tiger Woods and Vijay Singh both missed this year’s Buick Open). But more than anything, call him a winner.
Bateman finished with a birdie on the final hole Sunday at Grand Blanc to take the prize. And what did he have to say afterward?
Every player from Tiger Woods to Brian Bateman has to win their first one.
Here’s the thing. Not everyone has to win their first one. Some guys never do. It’s awesome that Bateman has had the chance to taste victory at the highest level of his profession.

According to a recent AP article, testing for performance-enhancing drugs could happen depending on what the PGA decides to do. Quoth Champions Tour President Rick George:
We’ll adopt whatever policies the PGA Tour does. I certainly don’t (think it’s a problem). But I think if the tour adopts a policy, it’s important that the Champions Tour adopt the same policy.

When Frank Nobilo did his piece on the Golf Channel after the U.S. Open on Sunday, it got me thinking about ways the broadcast giants could improve golf telecasts. The first thing that came to mind was a cap-cam that a player would wear. First off, it’s understandable that most players would never wear something like this during a competitive round, but I think asking a player to wear one during a practice round or pro-am would be extremely beneficial.

The Golf Channel’s “Live From” crew did an excellent job at this year’s U.S. Open. After the final round completed, Frank Nobilo went out and demonstrated the two shots Furyk and Woods had, and how difficult they really were. Most impressive was how deep the bunker was for Tiger’s shot, and the fact that he got it out, though it rolled across the green, is a testament to his real talent.
