Kim Wins First LGPA Tourney

South Korea’s In Kyung Kim won her first LPGA tournament on Sunday when she bested Angela Stanford by three strokes to win the Longs Drug Challenge at Blackhawk Country Club in Danville, California. She broke into tears after sinking a 30-foot putt to win the event. “I was overwhelmed,” Kim told the Associated Press. “It was a happy cry.”
Kim, in her second season on the LPGA tour, has six top ten finishes this year, including a tie for third in the US Women’s Open last month.

Big Break X Debuts on Tuesday

The Golf Channel’s popular reality show, “The Big Break” will debut its tenth season on Tuesday at 10pm. This time the contestants are couples…all sorts of couples. The eight men and eight women on the show include a married couple, rival college golf coaches, and a boyfriend/girlfriend combination. Among them is PGA pro, Brandt Snedeker’s brother, Haymes. The group will compete for an exemption for the LPGA or PGA tour as well as other prizes.

Ballesteros Has Brain Tumor

Five-time major winner, Seve Ballesteros announced on Sunday that he has been diagnosed with a brain tumor. The 51-year-old Spaniard was hospitalized in Madrid last week after a fainting spell. Further tests are necessary to tell whether the tumor is malignant or benign and to set a course of treatment.
Ballesteros won the Masters twice (1980 and 1983) and the British Open three times (1979, 1984, 1988). He also played on eight Ryder Cup teams before retiring from professional golf in 2007.

European Tour Increases Number of Required Events

The European Tour will require its members to compete in at least 12 events, beginning with the 2009 season, tour officials announced on Tuesday. This is one more than was required this season. The four major championships and the three World Golf Championships all count towards this number.
This move comes at a time when several top US players, including Phil Mickelson and Vijay Singh are considering European Tour membership. John Daly, the two-time major champion whose been in the news lately more for his antics than for his golf, told the Associated Press this week that he’s considering joining the European Tour for the 2009 season. Daly, who has blamed his less than stellar performance of late to a rib injury, made just five cuts in 16 events this year, earning $56,017. His world ranking plummeted #737.
