Making Sense of the FedExCup Playoffs

Making Sense of the FedExCup Playoffs

The second annual FedExCup PGA playoffs begin this week with The Barclay’s Tournament in Paramus, New Jersey. The FedExCup spans four tournaments and rewards the top finishers with an extra bonus of up to $10 million. The FedExCup period this year spans five weeks instead of four as the Ryder Cup event falls within September and is not a part of the playoff event.
Beginning the playoffs, the top ten players are:

Tiger Woods
Kenny Perry
Phil Mickelson
Padraig Harrington
Anthony Kim
Stewart Cink
Vijay Singh
Justin Leonard
Ryuji Imada
Geoff Ogilvy
Of course, Woods will not be competing in any of the FedExCup events due to his having knee surgery earlier …read more

Michelle Wie Fails to Qualify for LPGA Tour Card

Michelle Wie Fails to Qualify for LPGA Tour Card

The Canadian Women’s Open was a pretty good tournament for Michelle Wie, who’s had a roller-coaster of a year. It wasn’t, of course, as good as it was for Katherine Hull, who picked up her first LPGA win at the Open. However, Wie finished a respectable 12th place and earned herself $36,475 for the week’s work.
However, this past week was not nearly enough to qualify Wie for a 2009 LPGA Tour Card, something she’s been quoted as saying she wants. She fell close to $50,000 short in annual winnings from the $110,000 needed to automatically earn a card.
Of course, there’s …read more

Dara Torres Has Fun Talking Golf

Dara Torres Has Fun Talking Golf

Forty-one-year-old, five-time Olympian Dara Torres is one of the top stories to come out of the Beijing Olympic Games. Win or lose, the fact that she’s able to hold her own against swimmers half her age has inspired a generation. The video below finds Torres in a less serious mood, talking to pro golfers, other professional athletes, and even Donald Trump about golf. Take a look:

Tiger Offers Update

Tiger Offers Update

According to the update that Tiger Woods posted on his Web site yesterday, the world’s top golfer indicated that he is recovering from his knee surgery, but likely won’t swing a club until next year.
On whether he’s sitting home watching golf, he said that he’s watched a little, but that it’s frustrating to not be out there on the course. He is watching the Olympics (aren’t we all?) and he assures fans that he’ll be watching the Ryder Cup matches and cheering on Team USA in September.

What Golf Behavior Bothers you the Most?

What Golf Behavior Bothers you the Most?

What’s your biggest golf course pet peeve? Is it cellphones, slow play, golf cart daredevils? According to Peter Post in his book “In Playing Through: A Guide to the Unwritten Rules of Golf,” it’s slow play–cited by two-thirds of the people he surveyed. Posts’s book is coming out next week and also covers such topics as “what to do when you hit into other golfers or they hit into you,” “dealing with temper tantrums on the course,” and “dealing with cheaters.”
Post should know his etiquette–golf or not. He’s the great-grandson of etiquette maven, Emily Post. The Massachussets resident …read more

Rocco Mediate Falls Apart at PGA Championship

Rocco Mediate Falls Apart at PGA Championship

Ever since his challenge to Tiger Woods in this year’s US Open, veteran golfer, Rocco Mediate has become the player of the ordinary man. However, this isn’t going to be the week to see Mediate kissing a trophy. Having ended the third round in the middle of the pact, he’s fallen to the bottom of the leader board after 12 holes in the fourth round with a +9 so far for the day. I imagine Rocco’s praying for another rain storm.
