The 2008 US Open begins June 12 at San Diego’s Torrey Pines Golf Course. But, how much do you really know about this major golf event? See if you know all of these US Open trivia:

  • The first US Open was played in 1895.

  • The tournament has been played each year since then, except during WWI (1917-1918) and WWII (1942-45).
  • All 42,500 tickets to the 2008 US Open were sold to visitors from 25 countries, making this the 22nd consectutive sell-out.
  • The first US Open was held at Newport Country Club in Newport, RI (in 1895).
  • The last player to win consecutive US Open Tournaments is Curtis Strange (in 1988 and 1989).
  • Only one player has won the US Open in three consectutive years: Willie Anderson in 1903, 1904, and 1905.

  • The last amateur to win the US Open was Johnny Goodman in 1933. (He was an insurance salesman.)

  • The only player to lose the US Open in a playoff three times is Arnold Palmer. (He also won the tournament in 1960.)
