Atlanta to Lose PGA Tournament

Atlanta, which has hosted a PGA tour event since 1967, has seen its last PGA tournament…at least for a while. The Atlanta Classic Board, which oversees the event, announced this week that it has been unable to find a title sponsor since AT&T withdrew its support of the Atlanta Classic last year.
The Atlanta Classic, once played the week before the Masters Tournament, was moved to May for the last few years due to weather problems in April. The date change has led to a less challenging field of players. One six of the world’s top fifty players competed in the 2008 Atlanta Classic.
Atlanta golf fans will not be completely without golf, however. The city has signed an agreement to host an annual event for the Champions Tour, to be hosted at TPC Sugarloaf.
The PGA has not yet filled the empty slot in the tour schedule.

There’s talk of the Texas Open possibly trying to move into this spot. It would be great for the SA event usually scheduled in the fall as most of the top names skip this event.
