Chopra Wins at Kapalua

January 7, 2008 by Sandy Mitchell

Okay, so the Mercedes-Benz Championship this past weekend at Maui’s Kapalua Resort, may not have been the most exciting four rounds of golf in history, but don’t tell that to Daniel Chopra. The 34-year Swedish-born golfer beat out Steve Stricker in a four-hole, sudden-death playoff to finish -18 and grab the title. With it comes $1.1 million, a new Mercedes-Benz sports car, and a chance to play at the Masters in Augusta this year. The win is just Chopra’s second PGA win. He won the second to the last tour event in 2007 to qualify for a place in the 31-man line-up at Kapalua.

It was Chopra’s putting and consistant play that set him apart from the field. Even during the rain-soaked first round, he was sinking putts that most golfers would find difficult on a dry course.

This week the PGA island-hops to Oahu and Honolulu’s Waialae Country Club for the Sony Open, beginning January 10.
