World’s Greatest Golf Courses: Carnoustie

World’s Greatest Golf Courses: Carnoustie

Carnoustie Golf Links, one of the most scenic–and one of the most difficult–courses in the world, sits near the eastern shore of the Scottish Highlands.
The area has enticed golfers since around 1527 and the current course was constructed in 1850. Since then, “Car-nasty,” as it is sometimes referred to, has hosted dozens of major tournaments, including the 2007 British Open.
The 487-yard, par 4 18th hole, pictured in the video below, is known for its huge, deep bunkers approaching the green.
Take a look.

Back from Brain Surgery, Demsey Rejoins the PGA

Back from Brain Surgery, Demsey Rejoins the PGA

Former NCAA champion, Todd Demsey, closed the sixth round of Q-school with an 8-under 64 to grab one of the 26 full-exempt cards for next year’s PGA Tour.
Demsey, a former amateur teammate of Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson, was dignosed with a brain tumor in 2002 that resulted in two surgeries and months of rehabilitation. His last, and only, year on the PGA Tour was in 1997, where he made the cut in 9 or 27 events.
Todd Demsey was the 1993 NCAA Champion while at Arizona State.

Wastin’ Time Waitin’ for Golf Season

Wastin’ Time Waitin’ for Golf Season

If you, like me, live in the North where golf courses have been abandonned until spring, here’s a great time-waster I found to help you think of putting greens through the cold, winter months. Enjoy!

Sir Bob Prevails

Sir Bob Prevails

Twenty-eight-year-old, British golfer Richard Finch won the New Zealand open on Sunday, his first professional win, but it was 71-year-old Bob Charles that grabbed the tournament spotlight. Sir Bob (he was knighted in his native New Zealand in 1999) was the oldest man to ever make the cut on a major non-seniors tour, and finished a very respectable 23rd at 4 under par.
Ironically, the New Zealand Open was also the occasion for Charles’ first tournament win, in 1954 as an 18-year-old amateur. Since that time, Charles has won six PGA tournaments, eight European tourneys, and 23 events on the Champions …read more

Where else to start but where the game itself started–in Scotland, with St. Andrews and the Old Course? This well-made YouTube video shows the famous course, the quaint city of St. Andrews, and the spectacular, craggy coastline there.

My Favorite Golf Movies

My Favorite Golf Movies

Golf movies tend to either be funny, light-hearted looks at the game or “here’s how you do it”-type instructional videos.  Since it’s winter in most of the United States, these are my picks for the best comedies and light dramas about golf.  You can watch any of these with your non-golfing spouse or family member.  They’ll enjoy them too. (Click on the title to shop for your own copy or order them from NetFlix.)
CaddyShack.  What’s not to love about this Bill Murray classic?  It has a psycho caddie, a cute groundhog, Chevy Chase, and Rodney Dangerfield. Originally released in 1980, …read more

The Battle of the Sexes, Golf-Style

The Battle of the Sexes, Golf-Style

The battle of the sexes has reared its ugly, but undeniably interesting, head again–this time in golf.   U.S. Women’s Open champion, Cristie Kerr (pictured above) is partnering with her longtime friend and well-known golfing instructor Jim McLean against an all-male field in a two-person, best-ball match-play format tournament at PGA West’s Stadium course in La Quinta, California on March 6-11.
The tournament consists of 64 two-person teams competing for a first-place prize of $1 million.  The tournament is open to anyone who hasn’t competed in the PGA Tour, Nationwide Tour, Champions Tour, European Tour, European Challenge Tour, Japan Tour, or Asian …read more

Best Books for Golfers

As the holiday season approaches, there are our picks for the best books for those golfers and golf enthusiasts on your shopping list.
John Daly’s “Golf My Own Damn Way: A Real Guy’s Guide to Chopping Ten Strokes Off Your Score” – Just released in October, this is the latest in pro golfer, John Daly’s series of semi-biographical, semi-practical books.  It’s an enjoyable, light-hearted look at the game of golf and the people who play it.
