Mike Weir – “A Lousy Year”

On one of the golf forums, someone wrote that Tiger “obviously” threw the match with Mike Weir in yesterday’s President’s cup matches. I’ll leave that ludicrous statement alone, but the poster also mentioned that Mike had been playing “lousy” all year.
While I’m sure he’d like to be higher than 85th on the money list, I heard rumours about a possible injury that he’s been dealing with all year, though I have no facts to back to that up
So I don’t really know if he has been battling any physical problems or not.
The facts are that over his 12 years on tour since 1996, his average spot on the money list has been 78th. If you throw out his first two years where he only played in 5 and 4 events respectively, his average spot on the money list has been a respectable 44th.
So I guess, yes, 85th is below average for him.
Still, I wouldn’t complain too much if I’d made $990K this year
He said in his latest diary entry (regarding his match play victory over Tiger Woods in the President’s Cup)
However, it was still a fun way to finish in front of a wild crowd. I know it may seem hard to believe but I was quite calm on the first tee, really. I think that’s a testament to how good my game is right at the moment. When you don’t have to worry about where you’re going to hit it, you gain a lot of confidence and that leads to calmness.
So it looks like he’s solved whatever problems he’s been having with his game lately. I don’t know what his schedule is for the rest of year (not that there are many events left), but hopefully he can finish the year strongly or have a better year in 2008.
Mike
