The B5Media network:

The Masters brand

Today on the Masters web site :

“Billy Payne, Chairman of Augusta National Golf Club and the Masters Tournament, announced today three new strategic relationships as part of a worldwide initiative to utilize the Masters brand to further promote the game of golf.”

The Masters “brand” ?

What the heck is that? (I restrained myself from using the more vulgar form of the phrase utilized by todays’ younger web surfers).

Do you know anybody playing “Masters” golf clubs? Wearing any of the Masters line of clothing? Hmm, maybe I’ve been looking in the wrong stores. Perhaps I’ve been missing out on the Masters brand of dietary supplements. Or maybe it’s those Masters automotive products, featuring their Masters snow tires. Err, probably not on that last point, since I don’t think snow is something the Masters folks are familiar with.

Ok, enough with the “brand” jokes.

Let me pick on somebody else.

“For sports fans, the Masters represents a most hallowed rite of spring with its rich tradition and indelible imagery,” said ESPN President George Bodenheimer.

“Hallowed rite” ? .. give me a freakin’ break.

Ok, I admit I enjoy watching the tournament, the star studded invitation only field, the beautiful course, the limited t.v. commercials (yeah !!), all combine for a very enjoyable “sports spectacular”.

But it’s ONLY A GOLF TOURNAMENT !

Please, “Earth to Green Jacketed men” (and your associates), GET A GRIP on reality !

This is the one thing about the Masters that irks me , they just come off as so elitist.
