Was It Wise for Mickelson To Play?

Phil Mickelson is at +11 for the U.S. Open, and ironically enough, he still has a decent chance of making the cut. More importantly, was it a smart decision to attempt to play this week, given that his wrist was hurt far more than he let on (which is his perrogative). Did he potentially sacrifice the long-term health of his wrist in order to play this week?

Unfortunately, Phil is getting roasted by columnists and the 2nd round isn’t even over yet! I think Phil was so hell-bent on trying to exorcise the demons from last year that he lost sight of the bigger picture, which is his long-term health. Granted, we’re only talking about his wrist, but as it stands now, he has to take time off anyway, to allow his wrist to heal.

I now look for Phil to really gear up for the PGA Championship and make a serious run at winning. The British Open just hasn’t been kind to Phil, so I don’t see him trying real hard to be peaking at that time.

If I was Mickleson, I would have taken a pass on the U.S. Open. One bad swing in the rough could have ruined/ended his 2007 season. The fact he missed the cut is probably the best thing for his season.
