Sean O’Hair is getting roasted on various golf sites, forums, and boards across the Internet about his decision-making on the 17th hole this past weekend at the Players Championship. As you all know, he pulled out a 9-iron, took aim at the pin and promptly overshot not only the pin, but the entire green, and ended up in the drink. It definitely looked like he choked on the shot, and possibly have fanned it somewhat since it was going right as soon as it left the club.

However, in his interview after round, he convinced me he’s got serious game. He said he wasn’t playing for second place and that because he missed birdie on 16 (which he should have made), he needed to put serious heat on Mickelson by stiffing his tee-shot. I got to believe if he would have knocked his tee-shot within 5 feet, Mickelson would have also tried to stiff it, and who knows what would have happened then.

This does suggest O’Hair wasn’t faultless, because he made some mental mistakes coming in that cost him as much as the shot on 17, but at least he showed where his mind was at, and that was winning the golf tournament.
