Bart Bryant – Senior Closer

Bart Bryant – Senior Closer

Bart Bryant is getting a reputation on the Champions Tour as a serious closer. I like Bryant because he’s got that bulldog attitude that keeps him in the hunt, regardless of how well, or poor he’s playing. He just keeps coming. He’s also shown that he’s not afraid to hit the high-risk, high-reward shot when he needs it. He beat R.W. Eaks on the third playoff hole on Sunday to win the Regions Charity Classic and I was surprised it went that far.
Eaks is one of the those type of golfers that all of a …read more

Johnson Survives To Win

Johnson Survives To Win

Zach Johnson survived a 1-hole playoff to win the AT&T Classic over Ryuji Imada in Duluth, Georgia. I thought Imada had the momentum going into the playoff, but his tee-shot on the 1st playoff hole (number 18) left him 254-yards from the green, while Johnson only had about 220 yards on the par-5 finishing hole. Unfortunately, Imada’s 2nd shot came up short and ended up in the water while Johnson’s second shot ended up on the green.
Imada felt he had no choice but to go for the green in two because he felt Johnson was also …read more

2nd Tier Tournaments

2nd Tier Tournaments

I was looking at the leaderboard for this week’s AT&T Classic and was shocked by the no-names that are in the top-10 through Friday. Ryuji, Matteson, Brigman, Sutherland, Kanada, Andrade, Ogilvie (Joe), Marino (not Dan), are in the mix but save for Andrade, if I ran into any of the others on the street I wouldn’t recognized them. Mickelson is the defending champion, but he opted out of the tournament for personal reasons (as is his prerogative), but he was a huge draw for the tournament, sponsors, and TV folks as well. This of course doesn’t …read more

Johnny Miller Says Phil is Tiger’s Equal

Johnny Miller Says Phil is Tiger’s Equal

In a Golf Magazine interview, Johnny Miller, golf analyst for NBC, says Phil Mickelson has near equal talent to Tiger Woods. He also says that Mickelson is suffering from a inadequate coaching hangover early in his career. I personally like Miller simply because he calls it like he sees it, and while I don’t agree with everything he says, at least he has the cojones to say it.
And there’s no doubt that Mickelson, Els, Goosen, Singh,, Furyk, and others definitely have the talent to unseat Woods as the world’s number one player, but it doesn’t mean that they …read more

Sean O’Hair – Get Off His Back!

Sean O’Hair – Get Off His Back!

Sean O’Hair is getting roasted on various golf sites, forums, and boards across the Internet about his decision-making on the 17th hole this past weekend at the Players Championship. As you all know, he pulled out a 9-iron, took aim at the pin and promptly overshot not only the pin, but the entire green, and ended up in the drink. It definitely looked like he choked on the shot, and possibly have fanned it somewhat since it was going right as soon as it left the club.
However, in his interview after round, he convinced me he’s got serious …read more

Friggin’ Nicklaus

Friggin’ Nicklaus

I was reading an interview that Jack Nicklaus gave recently, and he was asked various questions regarding Tiger (of course), state of the game, Finchem (PGA comish), and other assorted and sundry topics. Whether Tiger will eclipse his major wins record? He said, “Oh, I think he probably will [break it], he probably should. He’s got that in his mind and as a goal. I think he’s as talented a player as I’ve ever seen. I think he’s absolutely fantastic. Will he? Who knows, but I would say he has a lot of years to win not many …read more

Notes From The Players Championship

Notes From The Players Championship

Phil Mickelson played a masterful round of golf on Sunday to win the Players Championship, and he’s deserving of all the accolades he’s sure to receive because of it. However, I do have a beef with the way the course was set up for the best players in the world. There was no rough to speak of if you hit off-line 10 or 15 yards and in fact the only reason guys weren’t hitting driver all the time was because there were too many trees. And the greens were playing as soft as your local muni …read more

Mickelson Cruises To Win

Mickelson Cruises To Win

In only his third week with Tiger’s old coach, Butch Harmon, Phil Mickelson has already won one of the most prestigious tournaments in golf, the Players Championship. Mickelson played almost flawless golf today and left no doubt *he’s* the hottest professional now heading into the U.S. Open. Sean O’Hair gave Mickelson a respectable run, but his mental error on 17 cost him not only the championship, but a top-10 finish as well.
Mickelson absolutely striped his tee-shots all day and was brilliant with his approach shots as well. Probably the most consistent round I’ve seen him play …read more

O’Hair Leads Players Championship

O’Hair Leads Players Championship

It was a wild day at the Players Championship and birdies were the rule and not the exception on an unusually easy scoring day (for everyone but Tiger at least). When the last putt was holed, Sean O’Hair was leading Phil Mickelson by one shot heading into the final round tomorrow. I was quite surprised to see the greens as soft as they were, considering it was a Saturday of a wannabe major championship. And when you have soft greens with professional golfers, well it’s like shooting fish in a barrel.
That’s not say the course was a …read more

Phil’s In Control

Phil’s In Control

So halfway through the Players Championship, Lefty is still leading the tournament. I’m surprised to be honest. I didn’t think he’d have the confidence to trust his swing changes this early after switching coaches, but here he is. But the true question is: will he still be here come Sunday? I think he will because there’s really no other seasoned veteran chasing him right now, and with course playing tough, it’s going to be hard to make a run at him.
And Tiger? Well, he made the cut, but that’s about all you can say about …read more
