Webb Wins in Australia
Karrie Webb won the Australian Women’s Open this past weekend by 6 shots and from a distance, this looks pretty impressive for the Aussy. Problem is, she beat the likes of Wei Yun-jye, Paula Marti of Spain and Minea Blomqvist of Finland; not exactly your top 10, top-20, or top-50 players on the LPGA Tour, so it’s not a real good barometer.
Yes, the media is still having their love-fest with Webb since she won the Kraft Nabisco Championship last year, but I think she’s still a rung below Sorenstam, Ochoa, and even Creamer. This isn’t the mid-90s, and she’s not beating up on Brandi Burton, Patti Sheehan, and Betsy King this time. The women on tour today are collectively much better players than their counterparts of 10 years ago and it shows week in and week out.
If Webb can hold her own this year in the majors, then it will be time to say she’s back.

Personally, I don’t find her a very interesting player. Just my opinion though.
She’s definitely not your bubbly, outgoing, type of personality that Creamer, Ochoa, Gulbis are. In fact, about 6 or 7 years ago, Alan Shipnuck of Sports Illustrated wrote some very critical golf columns about Webb, that eventually led to Webb refusing to speak to anyone from S.I.
