Mickelson Tied For Lead

Mickelson Tied For Lead

Yeah, I know, it’s only the first round, but Phil Mickelson is tied for the lead at the AT&T Pro Am at Pebble Beach. And truth be told, he could shoot himself right out of the tournament come Sunday, but this first round has got to be good for the confidence.
Also, considering that the weather is more conducive to playing football instead of golf really shows that all the players that shot under par are playing very well. The Golf Channel did a piece last night on Tom Watson’s return one last time to the course where he …read more

The International Saying Goodbye

The International Saying Goodbye

Well it appears that after 20 years as a staple on the PGA Tour, the International golf tournament at Castle Pines (south of Denver) will fade away after this year’s event. Rumor has it that the Jack Vickers (founder of the tournament) was not happy with the new date of this year’s tournament since it appears that some of the regular big-name players can’t make it because of timing issues.
This is a personal disappointment for me because the International is played about 30 minutes north of where I live and I’ve enjoyed myself every time I’ve been to the …read more

Pebble Beach Pro-Am

Pebble Beach Pro-Am

This week is the Pebble Beach Pro-Am on the Monterey Penninsula, and while some touring pros look forward to the event, there are others that avoid this like the plague. One of those is Tiger Woods. The official word is the Tiger doesn’t like the bumpy greens, but the unofficial word is that he detests (as do others) the 5 and 6-hour rounds that are common place this week.
Having had the pleasure of playing Pebble Beach a few years ago, I can see where the amateurs can really hold the pace of play if they’re not playing well. …read more

Webb Wins in Australia

Webb Wins in Australia

Karrie Webb won the Australian Women’s Open this past weekend by 6 shots and from a distance, this looks pretty impressive for the Aussy. Problem is, she beat the likes of Wei Yun-jye, Paula Marti of Spain and Minea Blomqvist of Finland; not exactly your top 10, top-20, or top-50 players on the LPGA Tour, so it’s not a real good barometer.
Yes, the media is still having their love-fest with Webb since she won the Kraft Nabisco Championship last year, but I think she’s still a rung below Sorenstam, Ochoa, and even Creamer. This isn’t the mid-90s, and …read more

Excellent Day For Golf

Excellent Day For Golf

Today was definitely can’t-miss-tv when it came to golf. First there was the Dubai Desert Classic this morning on the Golf Channel and was it a barn-burner. Woods was in it, then he was out of it, then he was in it, then his putter let him down one last time and he was out of it. Woods also played some not-so-Tiger-like shots that left us hackers proud. He fanned a 3-wood that only went about 120 yards; then he chili-dipped a chip-shot that not only didn’t make the putting surface, but trickled into the bunker. …read more

Showdown in Dubai?

Showdown in Dubai?

Well, if the planets are aligned tomorrow and Ernie Els and Tiger Woods play their A-games, then the golfing world might have the pleasure of watchng Els and Woods meet in a playoff at the Dubai Desert Classic. Yes, that’s asking a lot, but both Els and Woods played well today, with Ernie carding a 4-under 68, and Tiger shooting a 5-under 67 to put himself three behind the leader Els.
Els said a few weeks ago that his 3-year goal is to become the number 1 player in the world and winning tomorrow would be a huge step in …read more

Wie’s Support Fading

Wie’s Support Fading

It was announced this week that Michelle Wie was offered a sponsor’s exemption to play the LPGA’s first major of the season, the Kraft Nabisco Championship. It was completely expected and for now, completely deserved. Wie has played the women’s majors the last few years extremely well, and save for a mental error on the 72nd hole last year, could have at least tied Karrie Webb for a playoff position.
However, this is a new year and apparently, a new (and not so improved) Wie. There’s no question Wie has lost some major confidence and each competitive round …read more

Jason Gore – What Happened?

Jason Gore – What Happened?

I was looking at the leaderboard today after the first round of the FBR Open in Scottsdale and I came across Jason Gore’s score (+2) and I just started wondering, what happened to him? He was a fan-favorite and media darling when he burst on the PGA Tour in 2005 and even won the 84 Lumber Classic that year. I thought he was the real deal, and he seemed to enjoy interacting with the fans as well.
He struggled through most of 2006, but finished the year strong by making 8 cuts in 10 events. And that was …read more
