The World Cup – Anyone Watching?
Everyone knows I’ll watch pretty much anything on TV that is golf-related. Except I haven’t watched the 2006 World Cup, taking place at Sandy Lane Resort in Barbados. There are 24 two-man teams from around the world competing in four-ball, and then foursomes matches. Stewart Cink and J.J. Henry are the U.S. representatives, though its a far cry from when Tiger Woods teamed with David Duval back in 2000 to win the event.
While the event has some European top draws like Montgomerie, Donald, Langer, and Howell, the U.S. couldn’t get anyone from the top 10 to attend, which again indicates that this type of silly-season event just doesn’t provide enough monetary incentive for the Americans. Is this good or bad? I supposed it depends on perspective. If you’re the director of the tournament, then having U.S. participation is a must, but on the other hand, are Cink and Henry quality enough players to draw the crowds and television audience?

Dale – Cink and Henry werem’t the players in my opinion to bring in the crowds. It surprises me that the first prize of $1.4 million wasn’t enough to attract a better pair. Like you say it probably all comes down to timing, most of the top players will have been out Christmas shopping knowing they won’t have time this weekend at Tiger’s event.
