Swashbuckling Seve Coming Back

I read some very interesting news today: Seve Ballesteros will be playing more competitive golf next year, primarily on the Champions Tour. I was a big fan of Seve’s during his heyday, but he’s gotten more grumpy in the last few years and hasn’t had much positive to say about much. He also turned out to be a very unsportsman-like Ryder Cup Captain and player. Hopefullythe Seve of old will find his way back on the Champions Tour.

It’s hard to believe he only won 9 times on the PGA tour, but he did win 5 majors (2 Masters, 3 British Opens) and he left a lasting impression on all who saw him play. Was it at the British Open where he hit his tee shot in the parking lot, and then proceeded to save par? The man was a magician with recovery shots, though Tiger is much better than Seve ever was.

Here’s hoping Seve will breathe some life into the Champions Tour in 2007.

I followed Seve at this years Open at Hoylake. It was a joy to watch him play especially as his son was caddying for him.

I can still remember so much superb golf from the eighties when Seve was king. Winning the Masters in 1980 and 1983 and the Open in 1979, 1984 and 1988 – all fantastic to watch.

You mention the car park incident. This was in 1979 during the Open at Lytham St Annes. On the 16th hole Seve sliced his shot into a temporary car park. Several cars had to be moved before the magician proceeded to make birdie!

I let Seve off being grumpy – who wouldn’t be with all the back problems he has had. I’m just very glad to see him back in the playing arena.
