Pet Peeves

As a long-time golfer, I’ve got a few pet peeves that absolutely drive me bonkers during around of golf. And in no particular order:

  • Five-somes. I don’t why this is, but it seems that five-somes (and even six-somes) are becoming common place on many golf courses. And I’m not talking just the local muni. Pricey courses are starting to put out five players on a regular basis. If you’ve ever been behind a five-some, then you know the frustration of waiting, and waiting, and waiting…
  • Tee-boxes. Back a few years ago, there used to be just three sets of tees on most golf courses: red (women, beginners), white (average hack), and blue (your better than average golfer). Of course that’s changed and lots of courses have at least four sets of tees and some even have five. But I digress. My pet peeve here is the scores of average golfers (hacks, and I’m being kind) that use the blue (or back tees) and can barely carry the fairway on some holes. Why??? My philosophy here is that until you can shoot even par from the white’s (or middle tees), then dont’ use the back tees. Does anybody care that you shot 103 from the blue tees?
  • Ball-marks on the greens. This also seems to be betting worse on most courses. This is actually part of a larger problem called golf ettiquette (or lack of). Ball marks are the cancer of greens and it only takes a few extra seconds to repair your ball marks. More importantly, take a few extra seconds and look for other un-repaired ball marks. Your greenskeeper will be very grateful.
