Ernie Els Three-Year Plan to Catch Tiger

Ernie Els Three-Year Plan to Catch Tiger

After his win at the South African Airways Open last weekend, Ernie Els unofficially announced that he has a three-year plan to catch Tiger Woods. Normally that kind of news following a tournament win is usually buried on page 9 of the sports page, but this tidbit of news is all over.
First of all, given Tiger’s 11.53 lead over second place Jim Furyk, and his 14.36 lead over fifth-place Els, it will take at least three years of great golf by Ernie to pull it off. That assumes of course that Tiger treads water over three years and …read more

Woods To Miss Kapalua?

Woods To Miss Kapalua?

The 2006 season is barely over with and Tiger has already made the PGA brass nervous about next year. As everyone knows, the PGA Tour’s FedEx Cup begins in 2007 with a kick-off at the Mercedes Benz Championship at Kapalua on January 4th. The problem is that no one knows whether Tiger and Phil are coming to the party.
Even some of Tiger’s supporters are calling for him to show up at Kapalua, if nothing else, than to support Tim Finchem, the comish of the PGA Tour. However, Tiger’s no dummy and whether anyone wants to admit or …read more

Els Finally Wins One

Els Finally Wins One

Ernie Els finally got a win under his belt by shooting a 7-under 65 to beat Trevor Immelman by three shots at the South African Airways Open in Port Elizabeth, South Africa. It’s been a tough 18 months for Els and I think he was more seriously hurt than he let on. However, it appears he’s starting to trust his lower body (specifically his knee) and swing with confidence again.
I’d really like to see the Big Easy challenge in the majors next year and give Tiger a run for the tournaments that really matter. Els has an …read more

Tiger Wins, Again

Tiger Wins, Again

Yes, it’s a silly season event, played at Tiger Woods unoficiall home course in California, but Mr. Woods won yet again in 2007. This time, Woods came from behind to shoot 66 and win by 4, the Target World Challenger, over a fading Geoff Ogilvy, who was leading by two heading into the final round. While this is not a Tour Championship field by any stretch, it’s still a pretty good field and Tiger had to have his good stuff today to win.
I’ve said this before here, but I’m not convinced all of Tiger’s peers really appreciate what …read more

Tiger One Back at Target World Challenge

Tiger One Back at Target World Challenge

Tiger Woods trails Geoff Ogilvy by one shot heading into Sunday’s final round of the Target World Challenge in Thousand Oaks, California. This is another select-field, silly-season event that comprises 16 of the world’s best players at one of the best non-PGA layouts in the country.
Woods is extremely fortunate to only be trailing by one, simply because he left his approach shots in some of the worst places on the golf course. He was in the trees, in the rocks, blocked by fallen wood chips, in the long rough, and he still managed a 2-under 70. But …read more

The Outlook for 2007 – PGA

The Outlook for 2007 – PGA

It’s impossible to predict anything, let alone sporting events, but I’m going to give it a go for the PGA tour in 2007. The obvious prediction is that Tiger will continue his winning ways by winning the Masters in April. But I’m not convinced he’ll win there. Even though he’s won more majors there than anywhere else, I have a feeling he’ll struggle again this year. However, I also look for him to win the Open Championship. He’s fallen head over heels for the links golf in the U.K. and I think he’ll light it …read more

Woods Wins Player of the Year

Woods Wins Player of the Year

Yeah, it’s no surprise, but Tiger Woods won the 2006 Player of the Year, for the 8th time in 10 tries. Pretty phenomenal statistic all by itself. I was thinking about this earlier, and when Tiger is motivated (or gets motivated by an external source), there’s no stopping the man whatsoever.
Early in the year, Stephen Ames lit a fire under Woods by saying he was spraying golf balls over the course (which Woods was doing) and that he (Ames) had a legitimate chance of beating him in the match play event that was forthcoming. Now …read more

Big Break VI – Final Challenge

Big Break VI – Final Challenge

I wasn’t going to watch last night’s installment of the Big Break VI because it seemed redundant to have the women play the men again. But I’m glad I stayed tuned in because it ended up being a great match. Basically, it was the men against the women, but the twist was that Bri Vega and Denny Hepler had to play all eighteen holes with each of the contestants that got eliminated.
What really made it interesting was that it had the feel if a Skins game with some serious money available on each hole, and the money carried …read more

PGA Top Moments

PGA Top Moments

It’s no surprise, but Tiger Woods brings home the goods for top PGA moments for more than one reason. A lot of people were shocked that he missed the cut at the U.S. Open, but I was more suprised that he even showed up, considering that his Father had recently passed away. Everyone knows how close they were, but I don’t think anyone really understands how it might affect you (I certainly don’t ).
However, my favorite top moment of the year was Tiger’s complete dissection of the course and field at the Open Championship in Liverpool, …read more

Top LPGA Moments

Top LPGA Moments

Seeing as the year is winding down, I’m going to give my top moments for each major tour, and I’ll start with the LPGA tonight.
The top story for me was Lorena Ochoa winning the LPGA Player of the Year and breaking Annika Sorenstams’s streak in the process. Let’s be clear that Ochoa took the title away with her outstanding play all year, and while the majority of folks thought Ochoa would wilt in the late season tournaments, she not only held steady, but went toe-to-toe with Annika and beat her on a TKO.
The second biggest story was Paula Creamer …read more
