Julieta Granada Earned the $1 Million

Julieta Granada Earned the $1 Million

Wow. There’s been a mini-firestorm in the aftermath of Julieta Granada winning the ADT Championship and the $1 million first prize. There’s been numerous columns written that have implied she really didn’t earn the championship because the scores were reset after the third round.
Hogwash. If the scores would have carried over, she still would have won, going away. The other complaint is that the money breakdown was unfair and that far too much was given to the winner compared to the rest of the top five. There’s probably some merit to that because a look at …read more

Granada Crashes ADT Party

Granada Crashes ADT Party

Julieta Granada shot a bogey-free 68 today and won the LPGA’s ADT Championship and the $1 millon first prize. After three days of exciting golf, today’s golf was anti-climatic because it really didn’t turn into the shootout that everyone was hoping for. However, Granada played a very solid round of golf and let those falter around her.
Lorena Ochoa was only 1 back as she went to the 17th tee but then her tee shot into the water hazard. Karrie Webb was next to hit and she also hit into a water hazard, and both players were all …read more

Final Eight Set for ADT Championship

Final Eight Set for ADT Championship

The final eight have been set for the LGPA’s ADT Championship at Trump National and it looks like it has the potential to be a real shootout. Saturday’s round though had its excitement as both Gulbis and Creamer had to make difficult putts coming in to ensure their spot for Sunday.
What’s most exciting (in my opinion) about this format is that the scores will be reset on Sunday and all the players are starting even. Of course if your pulling for Ching or Granada, this might seem a bit unfair because they’re 5 shots up on the last …read more

Sorenstam Out; Ochoa In

Sorenstam Out; Ochoa In

Annika Sorenstam couldn’t put anything together today and missed the cut at the LPGA’s ADT Championship at Trump National Golf Course in West Palm Beach. Lorean Ochoa had to survive a six-person playoff to make it into Saturday’s round of 16, but finds herself 8 shots back of Ai Miyazato.
After Saturday’s round, the field will be cut in half once again and the scores will be reset heading into Sunday’s final round of 8. This is actually turning into a quality broadcast from a viewer perspective, but it’s still possible that the final round could conceiveably …read more

Miyazato Leads ADT Championship

Miyazato Leads ADT Championship

Ai Miyazato is leading after the first round of the LPGA’s ADT Championship in West Palm Beach, Florida. Miyazato shot a 4-under 68 and leads Karrie Webb by one, and Natalie Gulbis by two. Since this the LPGA’s first playoff-style tournament, there are some very nervous players heading into Friday’s cut-day.
After Friday’s round, the field will be cut to the top 16 and right now Annika Sorenstam and Lorena Ochoa are on the outside looking in as they shot +2 and +3 respectively. Should they miss the cut, it would be a huge blow to the …read more

PGA
How interesting that a couple of weeks after Tom Pernice voiced his opinion about the next year’s FedExCup playoff system, the shirts at PGA central magically implemented almost exactly what Pernice suggested. Now, Pernice is a former member of the Player’s committee so he does have some pull and influcence, but you gotta wonder if the fact that Woods and Mickelson both skipped out on the Tour Championship might have weighed on his mind a little as well.
LPGA
Annika Sorenstam was quoted as saying she’s “disappointed” with her 2006 season. Losing the Player of the Year and now the …read more

Sometimes, The Media…

Sometimes, The Media…

Okay, let me rant for a bit here. I’ve read numerous golf columns and blogs since this past weekend, and the overwhelming sentiment is that Karrie Webb should be the LPGA Player of the Year, and not Lorena Ochoa. Webb has had an outstanding year (second only to Ochoa) and she does have a major win in her pocket. But I think the majority of those that think Webb is more deserving are clearly viewing this from a sentimental perspective.
Yes, it’s good too see Webb winning again, but Ochoa simply had the more consistent year, as confirmed …read more

Did You Know…

Did You Know…

That there was a playoff tournament this year, for a major golf tour? Surprise, surprise. The LPGA has its innaugural playoff event this week, the ADT Championship. I knew the ADT tournament was being played this week, but I thought it was a LPGA silly season event where the ladies were thankful to be there, but let’s have fun and collect our checks, kind of thing.
I had no idea that there was an actual playoff. Rumor has it that the field will be cut in half after the first round, and then again in half after …read more

Ochoa Laps Field to Win

Ochoa Laps Field to Win

Lorena Ochoa put a huge exclamation point on the final round of the Mitchell Company LPGA Tournament of Champions in Mobile, Alabama today. She shot a final-round 65 and won by 10 strokes. Simply amazing. This of course locks up the LPGA Player of the Year for Ochoa and unseats Annika Sorenstam for the first time in almost a decade.
Ochoa was simply a machine today and the only real hiccup was on the 18th when she hit her second shot long and to the right of the green. Her iron shots were pure all day and …read more

Ochoa Needs One More Good Round

Ochoa Needs One More Good Round

Now that’s what I’m talking about. Finally, a day when some of the LPGA’s top golfers were in or near contention most of the day. And yet Lorena Ochoa left them in her dust on Saturday at the Mitchell Company LPGA Tournament of Champions in Mobile, Alabama. Ochoa played some fantastic golf today as she shot a 9-under 63 and now holds a 5-shot lead heading into Sunday’s final round.
She’s going to need all of that and maybe more as Paula Creamer, Julie Inkster, and Karen Stupples are still within striking distance. Cristie Kerr was right …read more
