The Streak; Wie’s Ryder Dreams
The Streak
Lots has been written since Tiger’s win on Monday about his chances to win 11 consecutive tournaments and tying Lord Byron Nelson’s long-standing record. Nelson’s feat is an incredible sports accomplishment that will probably never be bested by Tiger or anyone else in the near future. The competition is too tough (not to take anything away from Nelson) and it’s a different game today than it was in year’s past.
Even Tiger thinks it’s doable, but there are so many more variables than just showing up to play. As Tiger has admitted, winning also involves a certain amount of luck and it’s something you can’t count on or control. Never mind the media hype that would surround this feat and I have to believe the distractions alone would drive you insane. I remember watching the hype surrounding Mark McGuire’s attack on Roger Maris’ home run record and he was answering the same questions night-after-night. I have to believe that would wear you down from a mental standpoint. What’s interesting to think about is the amount of money that would be wagered if Tiger was to hit 9 or 10 consecutive tournaments. Wow.
Michelle Wie
Michelle Wie went on record yesterday saying her long-term goal is to play in a Ryder Cup. Whaaat? The only way for her to attempt to qualify would be to officially join the PGA tour and then accumulate enough points to make the team (as I don’t see Wie being anyone’s captain’s pick; can you imagine the fallout from that?).
Having goals and dreams are what makes us successful, but good grief, they have to be based on reality at some level. She can’t even make a cut at a men’s tournament and she’s dreaming of making a Ryder Cup team?
