Hal Sutton, Two Years Later

Hal Sutton, Two Years Later

It’s been two years since Hal Sutton lead the 2004 American Ryder Cup team into battle against the Euros.  To hear Sutton tell it, it’s been a quiet and somewhat lonely two years as he hasn’t had much contact with any of his former teammates since they got their clocks cleaned that fateful weekend.
It’s not totally surprising that he’s alienated some people as his somewhat boorish behavior was out of place at an international event like the Ryder Cup.  Certainly, the cowboy image he portrayed (with hat and all) didn’t really provide the effect he thought it might.
When asked if …read more

Cristie Kerr in Contention

Cristie Kerr in Contention

Seems like it’s been forever, but Cristie Kerr is in contention at the John Q. Hammons Hotel Classic. She shot a blistering 61 today and moved ahead of streaking Annika Sorenstam. Kerr has had an indifferent year, though she’s 4th on the money list heading into this week’s event, everyone thought this year might be the year she wins at least one major and possibly seriously contend in all of them.
Everyone’s aware of Kerr’s caterpillar-into-a-butterfly story and the transformation has been nothing short of amazing. It’s one thing to go through a physical makeover like Kerr did, …read more

Wie Misses Another Cut

Wie Misses Another Cut

I won’t rag on Michelle Wie any longer. Suffice to say she missed the cut at the European event today in Switzerland and in the process finished dead last. She has been crucified mercilessly across the Internet today so I won’t join in the bloodletting, but I will say that at some point these failures (in spite of the spin she puts on them) will start to affect her psyche. Because she’s human and only 16 years old.
Her “people” need to get grounded real quick and start setting realistic goals that are attainable, even given her incredible …read more

Singh Returning To Form?

Singh Returning To Form?

Is Vijay Singh returning to form again? He played extremely well in the Deutshce Bank Championship, but ran into the chainsaw known as Tiger Woods, or he would have won the tournament. It’s good to see the Fijian swinging good again and playing with confidence. He was the last player to unseat Tiger as the world’s number one player and while I don’t see it happening again (unless Tiger undergoes another swing change), Singh might make a run for number two.

The headlines read, “Wie Struggles Again in Men’s Event”. You’re kidding. I’m shocked. …read more

Anyone Seen John Daly?

Anyone Seen John Daly?

It was two years ago that the American media and golf fans were up in arms about trying to get John Daly onto the 2004 Ryder Cup team. He had actually played quite consistently (for him) that year and while he wasn’t going to make the team on points, captain Hal Sutton was having to field questions about making Daly a captain’s pick.
I thought that this being a Ryder Cup year, John would wake up once again and make a real run at making the team. Then I got to thinking. If you’ve seen his reality show …read more

Will Sergio Turn It Up for the Ryder Cup?

Will Sergio Turn It Up for the Ryder Cup?

Sergio Garcia is a very talented golfer. There is no doubting that fact whatsoever. He’s ranked 8th in the world and has been a mainstay in the top 20 for 7 years now. But there’s definitely two sides to the Sergio that shows up to play and they become different players around September, every two years.
Garcia, like his bretheren on the European tour look at the Ryder Cup as their personal playground and love nothing more than to whip the big bad Americans every two years (at least in recent years). He and Colin Montgomerie become …read more

The Streak; Wie’s Ryder Dreams

The Streak; Wie’s Ryder Dreams

The Streak
Lots has been written since Tiger’s win on Monday about his chances to win 11 consecutive tournaments and tying Lord Byron Nelson’s long-standing record. Nelson’s feat is an incredible sports accomplishment that will probably never be bested by Tiger or anyone else in the near future. The competition is too tough (not to take anything away from Nelson) and it’s a different game today than it was in year’s past.
Even Tiger thinks it’s doable, but there are so many more variables than just showing up to play. As Tiger has admitted, winning also involves a certain …read more

She’s Back…

She’s Back…

Yup, we’re talking about Michelle Wie once again playing against the men. This time she’s accepted an invitation to play the Omega European Masters in France against Europe’s best. I was initially all for Michelle taking her shots against the men because I truly thought she could hold her own (silly me), but it’s pretty evident that she’s a girl playing a man’s game.
Wie has loads of talent and even more potential, but the Wie vs. The Men thing is old now and the novelty has worn off for sure. What’s next? Watch …read more

Thomas Bjorn Upset After Being Left Off European Team

Thomas Bjorn Upset After Being Left Off European Team

Thomas Bjorn let European Ryder Cup captain Ian Woosnam know that he wasn’t at all happy with being left off the European Ryder Cup team. Bjorn was quoted as saying, “I feel gutted. I think he has been very poor. A friend of mine he isn’t — and I don’t have a problem saying that. He’s not taken charge of the captaincy in the way I see a captain should take charge and it’s disappointing. He’s put a lot of guys through misery by not talking to them.”
Woosnam chose Darren Clarke and Lee Westwood as his captain’s picks …read more

Tiger Wins 5th Straight

Tiger Wins 5th Straight

Tiger Woods continues to steamroll the PGA and this time he left Vijay Singh in his wake. Woods won the Deutsche Bank Championship on Sunday and has now won 5 consecutive tournaments. Singh started the final round with a 3-shot lead over Woods, but by number 10, Singh was trailing by 3 shots, meaning Tiger had made up 6 shots in 9 holes. Amazing.
Though Tiger struggled the first two rounds, he was absolutely drilling his iron shots again and draining putts that needed to go in. He looked clinical today as it appeared all he wanted …read more
