Annika Sorenstam Turns Up The Heat

Tiger Woods and Annika Sorenstam stand alone in many ways. One of them is winning. Sorenstam won the State Farm Classis today by shooting a final round 62 to win by two over Cristie Kerr. She’s now won 69 tournaments on the LPGA tour and will no doubt go down in history as the LPGA’s greatest golfer. She may not have had the kind of run Nancy Lopez did in the 70s, but I honestly believe the competition has been much more difficult during Annika’s reign. The top players on the LPGA are getting better at a younger age and they’re not afraid or intimidated by those that came before them.

Like Tiger Woods, Sorenstam gives the appearance she can turn her game on at any given time, and you have to wonder if all the press given to other players has motivated her recently. She’s got some very stiff competition this year in Lorena Ocho, Karrie Webb, Se Ri Pak, and any number of Korean players that are extremely talented.

Sorenstam’s best playing days are behind her, but she’s not too old to continue to play at the top level she’s been accustomed for a couple of more years, if she so desires.
