Wie Fires Caddie
August 8, 2006 by admin
What? I read those words when reading golf news this afternoon and I can’t believe it. Wie’s “people” fired caddie Greg Johnston after her poor finish in the Women’s British Open last weekend. It’s being reported from on different golf sites that Johnston learned of his firing from Ross Berlin, Wie’s agent, at the Manchester Airport while waiting for his return flight to the ‘States.
If in fact that’s the way it happened, then it was wrong the way it was handled. Maybe he knew it was coming and maybe he didn’t, but the fact is that at a minimum, Wie’s Father should have given him the news. But in all honesty, Michelle should have told him, with her Father and/or agent at her side, instead of giving the dirty work to her agent.
I have said recently that Johnston should have been more assertive (and maybe he was trying) in giving Wie more guidance on the course and maybe that’s the root of the problem. On the other hand, Johnston caddied for Julie Inkster for 12 years, and was very successful with Inkster, before Wie hijacked him away last year. Something smells amiss here.
