Tiger Wins PGA Championship and 12th Major

Tiger Wins PGA Championship and 12th Major

Wow. What else do you say about Tiger? He easily won the 2006 PGA Championship today at Medinah Country Club and in the process, his 12th major of his career. This round seemed more matter-of-fact than his win at the Open Championship last month when he surgically mastered the final round.
I’m actually very surprised that non one (maybe I shouldn’t be?) made a run at him considering the course was still there for the taking. I don’t think Tiger intimidates his peers like he did in 2000, but at the same time, these guys have folded …read more

Tiger Tied for Lead at PGA Championship

Tiger Tied for Lead at PGA Championship

Tiger Woods is tied for the lead with Luke Donald heading into the final round at the PGA Championship.  As everyone who’s even remotely interested in golf knows, Tiger is 11-0 when leading or holding a share of the lead going into a final round of a major championship.  That’s an incredible record to say the least.  Can he do it yet again?  It’s hard to say, but the longer he does it, the more impressive it is.
However, this championship is far from over and Woods could (though not likely) have an average day tomorrow and get passed by more than a …read more

Unknowns Lead PGA Championship

Unknowns Lead PGA Championship

Andrade, Donald, Herron, and Stenson.  Sounds like a law firm, but it’s the four-some tied for the lead at this year’s last major, the PGA Championship.  Of that group, Luke Donald is probably the only true contendor, but lurking 1 behind is Mr. Woods himself.  Davis Love III and Geoff Ogilvy are also 1 back and there’s another group of four two back heading into Saturday.
Woods played a safe round and didn’t get into too much trouble, but was somewhat inconsistent with his tee ball.  On the other hand, Mickelson hit more fairways than Tiger but struggled with his approach …read more

Is it Complete Denial?

Is it Complete Denial?

I know I’ve talked about this before, but what happened to the days of honesty from coaches and managers? Was reading Captain Lehman’s comments about his rookies on the Ryder Cup team and he said, “…So the idea of not having experience does not scare me at all.” If the team had only 2, maybe 3 rookies, it’d be different, but the bottom half of the Ryder Cup team is not only lacking Ryder Cup experience, but winning in general.
I know it’s in vogue to completely block out reality (see Sergio Garcia and Michelle Wie), but sometimes it’s …read more

Ryder Cup Tidbits

Ryder Cup Tidbits

There’s a great article by Jackie Burke in the latest edition of Golf Digest about his experiences as an assistant on the 2004 Ryder Cup team. He comes across as a genuine, down-to-earth, kind-of-guy that would be great to hang with for a round of golf. The main theme I got from the article was that our boys are extremely pampered (dare I say soft?) and that lots of money (millions) are spent on the gala event we call the Ryder Cup.
For example, Burke says that each player/captain/co-captain received three suits, five pairs of slacks, a jacket, 4 …read more

Golf DVDs

Golf DVDs

Was watching some old videotapes I have of the 2000 U.S.  Open that Tiger won (by burying the field BTW) and since I’ve watched it dozens of times the tape is getting kind of worn.  Decided to look online and order a DVD of the same tournament.  Wow, was I in for a suprise.  Either I’m not googling the correct search terms or there is no demand for these type of DVDs because it’s very hard to find.
I did find a tape of Tiger’s 2002 U.S. Open win…for $145.00!!  What?  I also have Jack’s (that’s Nicklaus) 1986 Masters win on tape …read more

PGA Championship: Tiger vs. Phil?

PGA Championship: Tiger vs. Phil?

The final major of the year starts on Thursday at Medinah and the golf world is gaa-gaa over a possible Woods-Mickelson showdown on Sunday.  They will be playing together (as is customary) for the first two rounds (along with U.S. Open winner Geoff Ogilvy) so the mood could be set if either player jumps out to a quick start.
However, as is the case more often than not, the odds of both players playing outstanding golf are really low.  In fact, it’s quite possible that neither could be a factor come Sunday, primarily because there’s lots of other golfers that can …read more

Dean Wilson – One of the Good Guys

Dean Wilson – One of the Good Guys

Dean Wilson outlasted Tom Lehman in a playoff yesterday to win the International at Castle Pines in Colorado. Wilson’s prior claim-to-fame before winning yesterday was his classy approach to playing with Annika Sorenstam three years ago at the Colonial in Ft. Worth, Texas. Wilson probably got more mileage out that pairing than anything else he’s done since, but he can finally put that to rest as he’s now a PGA tour winner.
Thankfully, we don’t have to discuss Tom Lehman’s possible option to actually play on the Ryder Cup team. I have given this some more thought and …read more

Darren Clarke’s Wife Passes Away From Cancer

Darren Clarke’s Wife Passes Away From Cancer

It’s truly a sad day for anyone that follows golf with any sort of regularity, as Heather Clarke, wife of Darren, succumbed to cancer early Sunday morning.
Darren Clarke has always been of the classiest players on the European tour and has always treated American fans with the utmost respect.
Darren last played competitive golf on the Friday of the Open Championship, when announced he’d be on hiatus from golf to tend to his wife.  I can’t imagine what life would be like without my wife, Marcia.
Our thoughts and prayers go out to Darren and his family.
Yes, golf was played today …read more

Lehman Lurking at International

Lehman Lurking at International

I can’t believe all the hoopla surrounding Lehman possibly making the Ryder Cup team now that he’s in contention at the International at Castle Pines in Colorado.  He’s three points out of first place and that’s not a lot to have to make up in the modified Stableford system of scoring.
While this may seem as a criticism of Lehman, it’s really not.  My main beef and personal opinion is that the “Captain” of the Ryder Cup team should be just that, the Captain of the squad and leader of the team.  One argument in favor of Lehman being a player-captain …read more
