Interpreting 50
There have been dozens of columns written since yesterday that have “50″ as a theme, in honor of Tiger winning his 50th PGA tournament and one in particular got my attention. It was about the fact that there are no American players under 30 that are in the top 50 world rankings. Of course, I couldn’t believe it and had to check it out for myself, and sure enough, it’s true.
To put it in a different perspective, there are a total of 16 American players in the top 50, all over 30. Put a different way, American players comprise 32% of the top 50. To me this is staggering, because it really hammers home the point that International players are dominating the PGA tour. It’s no wonder the Europeans keep kicking our butts in the Ryder Cup. Speaking of which…positions 7 through 10 of the American Ryder Cup team average 55th in the World Rankings.
Our “young guns” seem to be shooting blanks.
