Tiger One Back After 1st Round at Open Championship

Tiger One Back After 1st Round at Open Championship

Tiger Woods made an eagle on the closing hole at the Royal Liverpool Golf Club on Thursday to pull within one of the leader, Graeme McDowell, who sits at 6-under heading into the second round.  Heavy overnight rains softened the course and made the course easy to tame for the world’s best golfers.  In fact, most of the players were concerned about the condition of the course because of all the burned-out spots on the fairways and greens and how this might allow tee shots to run through th fairways into the rough.
It’s way too early in the tournament see …read more

Open Championship Picks

Open Championship Picks

This the third of the four majors for the year and it should be a wide-open affair for the first time in a long time. Royal Liverpool Golf Club is unknown to almost everyone (including the European players) so there’s no home-field advantage as usually the case when playing across the pond.
Early reports indicate the course is playing fast and hard and the non-existant rough plays right into the hands of the big bombers (Woods, Mickelson, Singh), but I’m not convinced the winner will come from the world top 5. The obvious pick is Tiger Woods, but I’m …read more

Golf for the Beginner – Lessons

Golf for the Beginner – Lessons

So you went out to the local driving range or maybe even went to the local municipal course to see if you’d enjoy the game. I hope you enjoyed the experience as it will only get better. At this point, if you’re really serious about playing golf and getting the most out of it, the best advice I can give you is take a series of lessons. You have a couple of options here. Most driving ranges have certified teaching professionals that give lessons, and virutally all golf courses and clubs have teaching professionals that give …read more

Open Championship Week

Open Championship Week

The Open Championship (a.k.a. British Open) begins this week on Thursday at Royal Liverpool Golf Club in Liverpool, England.  Yup, it’s the same Liverpool where the Beatles began their career.  In fact, the last time the Open Championship was played in Liverpool was 1967, the same year Sgt. Peppers was released.  Suffice to say that the golf course will be a complete unknown to almost all of the professionals, save for Phil Mickelson, who’s been there twice in the last month.
Tiger Woods is the defending champion and will be playing for only the third time since his father’s death.  Phil …read more

Gulbis Fails To Close Deal

Gulbis Fails To Close Deal

LPGA
Natalie Gulbis missed yet another opportunity to win her first LPGA tournament when she missed a 9-foot birdie putt that would have forced the playoff to continue. Mi Hyun Kim won the Jamie Farr Owens Classic by making an 18-foot birdie putt on the third playoff hole. There was a push earlier this year by the powers-at-be at LPGA HQ to force the women to play faster (especially when it came to TV coverage). Some of the criticism stemmed from the fact that by-and-large, most of the LPGA players have their caddies help align their shots (every shot) before …read more

Wie Withdraws; Watson Shares Lead at Champions Tour Event

PGA
Michelle Wie, suffering from heat exhaustion, withdrew from the John Deere Classic and was transported to the local hospital by ambulance. This was yet another setback in her attempt to try and make the cut on the men’s tour.
Multiple accounts of Wie’s round on Friday clearly indicate she was under the weather fairly quickly after she started her round. Photo’s also show a struggling Wie just trying to walk between shots as she tried to finish but couldn’t.

Tom Watson shares the lead with 5 others at the Ford Senior Players Championship in Dearborn, Michigan. Watson …read more

Wie Struggles at John Deere

Wie Struggles at John Deere

Michelle Wie stuggled to a 6-over 77 for the first round at the John Deere Classic, for which she received a special invite. As I’ve mentioned in the past, Wie is definitely not in tune with reality after she has a bad round. After completing her round, she said, “It was very uncharacteristic,” she said. “Considering that I had the water hazard penalties, considering that I had to call unplayable, considering that I hit my driver like 50 yards right, I felt like I played really well.
“… I have a lot of confidence going into tomorrow.”
Wow. …read more

Wie Trying Again To Make Cut; Poor Turnout at Match Play Championship

Wie Trying Again To Make Cut; Poor Turnout at Match Play Championship

PGA
Michelle Wie is playing in her fifth men’s tournament on the PGA and is still trying to make her first cut. The tournament director asked Wie back this year because he had a tremendous turnout at last year’s event and is hoping to draw similar numbers. On the one hand, I think it’s great that Wie is a drawing card for tournaments all over the world (men or women) because she really is that talented. We followed her at the 2005 Women’s U.S. Open at Cherry Hills in Denver and the crowd following her was enormous (you could actually …read more

Mid-Year Review

Mid-Year Review

Time for a look back at the first six months of the golf world, from the surprises, disappointments, and just strangeness of it all.
PGA Tour
The biggest surprise has to be that Geoff Ogilvy is number 2 on the money list halfway through the season, and that Ernie Els is number 50! Granted, Els is probably hurting more than he’s letting on from his knee surgery earlier this year, but it’s still hard to believe he’s not in the top 10. Tiger Woods has fallen to number 7, but it’s understandable because he hasn’t played much since his Father’s …read more

Golf for the Beginner

Golf for the Beginner

So you want to start playing golf? Where do you start? How do you start? What’s it cost? Where do I play? What about golf clubs? Balls? Shoes? Over the next few weeks I’ll be tackling some basic beginner questions for those wanting to try the wonderful game of golf! First of all, what’s your motivation for getting started? It’s important because golf probably discourages more first-time players than any other sport, simply because it’s much harder than it looks! Not to worry though because once you get …read more
