Is it me, or is Steve Duemig got some real issues with women? It’s obvious he doesn’t like Michelle Wie, but I thought he was more professional than he’s been showing on the Golf Channel’s Grey Goose 19th Hole. A couple of weeks ago, he guaranteed that Wie wouldn’t qualify for the U.S. Open, but if she did, Deumig would wear a hula skirt and matching top as part of a bet. Though it was all in fun, there’s been an underlying current of real distaste for Wie that started last year because of all the sponsor’s exemptions she had received for PGA tournaments.

The rants have continued this year, but last week, after Wie failed to qualify for the U.S. Open, Deumig’s “final thoughts” on the 19th Hole were way over the top in my opinion. First he was annoyed because he had to admit that Wie is the 2nd most popular player on the MEN’s tour behind Tiger Woods. But it didn’t stop there. However, he was really upset because he felt the rest of the competitors were unfairly hurt by all the commotion caused by the 5000+plus gallery following Michelle Wie. Excuse me? How many U.S. Open qualifying tournaments attract more than a handfull of relative to begin with? Yes, the tournament director probably should have anticipated the possible gallery for Wie, but c’mon this is a qualifying tournament, NOT the real deal. Give the director a break.

My personal opinion is that it’s time for Deumig to move on and bring Bob Valvano on full-time to the 19th Hole. Valvano is extremely professional, but knows how to get his opinions across without sounding like Atilla the Hun.
